Opportunities afforded from ACT 77:
Students as Assessment Partners in Micro-Credentials & Badging
Towards Motivation, Articulation, and Certification
Jason Gingold (Director) & Jason Finley (Co-Op Coordinator), Randolph Technical Career Center
Randolph Technical Career Center in interested in modularization of learning that leads to certification in a specific area. A person can build on that by working through multiple levels of proficiency; which include face-to-face classes, time spent applying the learning, and additional verification of knowledge through an external, industry-recognized certification provider.
Ford, GM, Subaru, VW, Peterbilt, Freightliner all have manufacturer-based programs. Many community colleges (NH in our area) now partner with these manufactures to offer Associate's Degrees primarily built around their certifications and internships. When these colleges see our students' scores on the ASVAB in Mechanical Comprehension, Electronics Information, and Auto & Shop Information...coupled with their manufacture transcripts from their Co-ops...they are bending over backwards to have our kids apply to their schools.
A final thought...I think that badges could be a way to not only demonstrate aptitudes and competence to employers and colleges...but if they are diverse in what they represent...they validate interests and strengths to/for the students themselves. With "grades" we typically only look at a certain set of knowledge sets...often ones that are important for traditional four year liberal arts degrees. But, badges could let us both see and acknowledge the whole student. Maybe that's another way that badges address equity.
